Automatic driving lessons in Worcester

I’m Lee, a Grade A DVSA-approved driving instructor, and I’ve been teaching people to drive around Worcester for more than twenty years. I teach in an automatic Toyota Yaris Hybrid and nothing else. With no clutch or gears to manage, lesson time goes on the driving itself: where to look, when to go, and how to stay calm when the road gets busy.

This page explains how lessons work if you live in Worcester, from your first drive on quiet local roads to being ready for a test at the Worcester centre in Warndon.

How lessons build up

Everyone moves at a different pace, so this is an order, not a timetable. The Worcester test centre is on Stanier Road in Warndon, within the city itself, so we can bring in the kind of roads used on tests as soon as you’re ready for them, rather than leaving them until the end.

The first few lessons

Your first lesson is gentle. We get a feel for the car together: moving off, stopping, steering and simple turns. Early lessons stay on quieter residential roads, and the estates around Warndon, Perdiswell and Blackpole suit this well. There’s room to settle in without much traffic around you.

Busier roads

Next come roads with more going on: parked cars and tighter junctions around St John’s and Barbourne, then the steady traffic of the Droitwich Road and London Road. This is where checking your mirrors, judging gaps and planning ahead become habits.

Roundabouts, dual carriageways and the city centre

We take roundabouts in stages rather than all at once, starting with simpler ones and working up to busier, multi-lane ones such as Six Ways on the A4440. We also drive the A4440 ring road, where lane choice and merging matter, and the slower, pedestrian-heavy streets of the city centre, where careful observation counts for more than speed.

Getting ready for your test

When you’re close, lessons turn into mock tests. We practise the manoeuvres and independent driving with a sat nav, until the format of the test feels familiar rather than daunting. The aim isn’t just a pass. It’s being ready to drive safely on your own.

Preparing for the Worcester test

The DVSA doesn’t publish test routes, and examiners vary them, so what helps is knowing the kinds of roads and junctions that come up, not memorising one route. A few places around the city catch learners out, including bus lanes that need a shoulder check before you cross, a stop line that has to be a full stop, and roundabouts where lane choice needs deciding early.

I’ve written these up and filmed many of them, so you can see them before you drive them:

Pick-up and where lessons run

Lessons include pick-up and drop-off. Areas I teach in regularly include:

  • Worcester city centre
  • St John’s
  • Barbourne
  • Warndon
  • Perdiswell
  • Blackpole
  • Kempsey

Tell me where you’d like to be collected when you get in touch, and I’ll confirm it works.

If you live in Droitwich or Pershore, lessons work a little differently. Your test will still be at the Worcester centre, so time on the city’s roads is built in after the early lessons near home. See lessons in Droitwich or lessons in Pershore.

If you are nervous about driving

Some people who contact me are anxious about learning, or have had lessons elsewhere that knocked their confidence. I’ve lived with anxiety for most of my life, so patience comes naturally, and nobody is rushed in my car.

Nothing in the order above changes. We simply take each step when you’re ready for it. A mistake is just information: we slow down, talk it through and go again. If nerves are a big part of it for you, learning to drive with anxiety goes into much more detail, including coping on test day.

Starting out, switching from manual or coming back

Complete beginners

We start from nothing, on quiet roads, at your pace.

Switching from manual

If the clutch and gears were getting in the way, an automatic takes them out of the picture.

Coming back after a break, or after a failed test

We find where your confidence is now, build on what you already know and fill the gaps.

One thing worth knowing before you start: if you pass your test in an automatic, your licence covers automatic cars only. If you might need to drive a manual later, ask me and we’ll talk it through.

I’ve had 21 hours of driving lessons with my instructor so far, and I’ve improved so much since my first lesson. My confidence behind the wheel has grown with every lesson, and I feel much more capable and comfortable driving. He’s always patient, explains everything clearly, and takes time to go through manoeuvres and mistakes for further development. He also has a great sense of humour, which makes lessons enjoyable and helps take the nerves out of learning to drive. I genuinely look forward to my lessons and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a supportive, knowledgeable, and encouraging driving instructor. Truly an expert in the field!
